Is Electric In-Floor Heating Worth The Investment?

As someone who’s been in the construction and renovation business for decades, I can tell you that electric in-floor heating is one of the best ways to add comfort, efficiency, and value to your space. Whether it’s for your bathroom, kitchen, or even your basement, an in-floor heating system keeps your feet warm and your energy bills low —without the noise or hassle of traditional heating. They are also versatile and offer a variety of benefits compared to traditional heating systems.

But there are a few important things to note first, like how do you install them and where is the best place to have them for maximum comfort and efficiency. It’s also important to understand the benefits and if this is the right investment for you. Here’s a guide on what you need to know about electric in-floor heating systems.

What Are Electric Floor Heating Systems and How Do They Work?

When I’m renovating a home, one upgrade I always recommend is electric floor heating. It’s a game-changer for comfort and efficiency. So, what is it?

Simply put, in-floor heating systems use electric cables or wires embedded in a membrane to deliver consistent warmth across your floor. Unlike traditional forced-air systems, which can leave you shivering in one corner and sweating in another, electric heating heats evenly —no cold spots, just cozy toes.

They are also typically less expensive to install than hydronic systems, which use heated water, and provide reliable heat across an entire space.

Whether you’re tackling a bathroom reno or upgrading your basement, electric floor heating makes a noticeable difference.

Benefits of Electric In-Floor Heating Systems

Electric floor heating systems offer range of benefits that make them a practical and luxurious addition to any home. Here’s why they’re worth considering:

Electric In-Floor Heating Systems Create Even Heat Distribution

The beauty of electric floor heating is that it provides an even heat distribution across the floor, which eliminates cold spots and creates a comfortable, consistent warmth when walking on floors, especially in the colder months, and is ideal for tiled floors.

Energy Efficiency

When the floor is heated, you can maintain a comfortable temperature with a lower consistent thermostat setting, potentially reducing energy costs. Often in-floor heating is concentrated in specific zones like a bathroom, which requires less energy to maintain comfortable temperatures.

Homeowners Tip: When using bathroom in-floor heating the cables should be in areas with the most foot traffic, like in front of the vanity, toilet, and around bathtubs and showers. However, do not lay electric heat under the footprint of a cabinet, bathtub, or toilet.

Compatible with Various Flooring Materials

In-floor electric heating is ideal when using ceramic or porcelain tile, as they are excellent heat conductors. However, other flooring materials, like stone, laminate, vinyl and engineered wood are good too but do have temperature limitations.

Doesn’t Interfere with the Square Footage of a Room

In small bathrooms, every inch of space is important. Traditional heating systems like forced air vents or radiators are necessary for overall room warmth but can take up valuable wall or floor space.

In-floor heating, on the other hand, doesn’t require any extra space above or around your floor, making it an ideal way to add extra comfort.

While it won’t fully replace the heat provided by a forced air vent or a radiator, it can complement your existing system by providing additional warmth directly to the floor, creating a cozy and evenly heated environment.

This combination ensures your bathroom stays warm without sacrificing the space needed for your daily routine.

Require Minimal Maintenance and Upkeep

In general, electric heating systems don’t require any kind of continuous upkeep or repair.

Installation Tip: The electrical installation should be performed by a licensed electrician or certified heating contractor. Although a contractor or a homeowner can install heating elements or panels, a licensed electrical contractor should complete the actual electrical connection. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Best Spots In Your Home to Use Electric In Floor Heating Systems

Electric floor heating systems are incredibly versatile and can be installed in a variety of spaces throughout your home. From bathrooms to basements, here are the top areas where you can benefit from the comfort of in-floor heating:

Bathrooms:

One of the most popular rooms to install in-floor heating is the bathroom, as it turns cold tile floors into nice toasty warm floors. Plus, bathrooms often have smaller square footage, making installation more affordable and quicker to heat.

Basements:

We’ve all been in dark cold basements with concrete floors, and installing in-floor heating in select areas, like a bathroom or TV lounge area, is an ideal solution for keeping these spaces warm and inviting.

DITRA-HEAT is a fabulous choice in basement areas where moisture and cold can be a concern. The membrane acts as a vapour management system, helping to mitigate any moisture issues in the basement floors.

Entryways and Mudrooms:

In-floor heating for entryways and mudrooms is a great idea especially if you live in colder climate areas. There’s nothing better than taking off your winter boots to feel a warm floor. The heat from the floors not only helps keep this space warm and comfortable, but also helps dry boots and outerwear quickly.

Laundry Rooms:

Floors in laundry areas can also benefit from in-floor heating and Schluter’s uncoupling membrane will help protect tiles from movement and vibrations of washing machines. Also, laundry rooms are still typically in the basement so in-floor heating helps keep the room warm and cozy while using it.

BONUS – Outdoor Spaces:

While the in-floor heating system you use in your bathroom project will not work outdoors —the Schluter systems we use aren’t approved for outdoor projects —there are specific types of in-floor heating systems that can be used for exterior applications. For example, driveways, walkways and patios.

These systems prevent ice and snow buildup, keeping maintenance to a minimum and maximizing safety. It’s best to ask your contractor or landscaper which system can be used.

Installation Tips for Electric In-Floor Heating

When it comes to installing electric in-floor heating, getting it right the first time is important for safety, durability, and long-term efficiency. Over the years, I’ve seen how important it is to use the right products and get the installation process done properly.

Here are some key tips I always follow:

Hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor for Electrical Wiring

Electrical work should never be handled by non-professionals, especially when it comes to something as crucial as in-floor heating. The wiring needs to be done by a licensed electrical contractor —you don’t want to spark a fire or get a shock, especially in a wet zone like the bathroom.

While laying down the heating mats might seem straightforward, connecting them to your electrical system is a task that requires a professional. This ensures the job is up to code, safe, and runs efficiently.

Depending on where you live you may also need to file for the proper electrical permits. If you’re in Ontario check with the Electrical Safety Authority if you are unsure.

Consider Hiring a Professional Tiler

Laying tiles over electric heating is an important task that requires precision. For the best results, it’s worth having professional installation completed by a skilled tiler who knows how to properly set tiles while accommodating the heating system underneath.

This ensures that the flooring is both visually appealing and structurally sound, preventing cracks or heat-related issues.

Plus, you really want to avoid nicking a cable when installing your tile, which could potentially damage your system, so having someone skilled at installing your tile is always a good idea.

Pick the Right Materials for the Job

Choosing the right materials is key to making sure your in-floor heating system works as it should. For in-floor heating, I always turn to high-quality uncoupling membranes.

I’m a big fan of Schluter’s in-floor heating system —and you may have seen us install it on so many of our projects. The uncoupling layer of the Schluter DITRA-HEAT membrane prevents stresses and absorbs movement from the subfloor significantly reducing the risks of cracks and damage to tiles and grout lines. It also provides waterproofing benefits which is ideal for wet areas, like bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms.

I’m a big fan of in-floor heating and highly recommend that you install it in your next bathroom reno. In-floor heating technology has improved a lot that it can even be installed in an existing bathroom. We like the Schluter systems, you've seen us use them on our shows. Schluter’s electric floor warming system includes uncoupling technology in their DITRA-HEAT line, which keeps your tiled floors and grout from cracking. Plus, the design allows you to install cable only in the areas that require heating. It’s pointless to put heating underneath your vanity! #schluter #partner

The system also allows you to create customizable heating zones so you only heat areas that are needed, helping you save on energy and customizing the warmth where it is needed most, like in front of a sink and vanity area and around bathtubs and showers.

DITRA-HEAT installation is relatively easy as the membrane securely holds the cables in place ensuring uniform spacing and routing.

If you’re looking for an even simpler, more effective way to install your heating system, Schluter’s DITRA-HEAT Peel & Stick membrane is a game changer. This self-adhesive membrane sticks directly to the subfloor, making the installation process much easier and faster.

Whether you’re a DIYer or a contractor, this product saves time without compromising on quality.

Make Sure Your Bathroom is Watertight

A bathroom is a high-moisture area, so it’s crucial to ensure your floor is protected from water damage. The right waterproofing membrane is essential to keep moisture out and protect your heating system.

Using a high-quality system will keep your bathroom safe from water and protect the integrity of your floor and heating system for years to come.

Controlling Your In-Floor Heating with a Smart Thermostat

When it comes to controlling your in-floor heating, I always recommend using a smart programmable thermostat. It’s one of the easiest and most efficient ways to manage the temperature of your floors.

With a smart thermostat, you have full control over your heating, which means no more wasting energy when you’re not around. You can adjust the temperature from anywhere—whether you’re at home, at work, or on the go. That means you’ll never have to come home to a cold floor.

Plus, this can help you save money on your energy bills as it’s not on when it’s not needed.
