How To Incorporate Matte Black In Your Bathroom Design
I’m a big fan of matte black, and yes, it’s popular in today’s homes, I think it is also classic enough that it won’t date as forest green did in the 80s. I think it will continue to be used to create a contemporary, modern aspect in home décor for years to come. I particularly love matte black in bathrooms as it can completely update your bathroom with a simple switch out of your faucet fixtures and cabinet hardware. If you watched Holmes Family Rescue, you would have seen our designers pick a lot of matte black accessories.
Matte black fixtures are striking and contemporary, as well as timeless. While brushed nickel faucets are a safe bet, consider matte black as a modern alternative. It works in a classic or eclectic setting with many different colour combinations. Go big and bold, or just a touch of accents. Either way, your bathroom will become a beautiful space.
Here are some ways to incorporate matte black into your bathroom.
Matte Black Fixtures Are Easy to Maintain
Depending on the quality and material of the fixture, a matte black surface is relatively easy to keep clean. Water stains on faucets are common, but they’re simple to remove with a soapy wipe. Smears, stains, fingerprints, and scratches appear less on black matte than on chrome or other metallic surfaces, so it’s excellent for busy bathrooms.
Matte Black Has A Wow Design Factor
Black is a striking hue, but matte black is really slick and has a great WOW factor. It makes a strong statement and reflects relatively little light. However, it can also be subtly used throughout a bathroom and still provides an elegant and sophisticated wow factor.
Matte black Accents Worked Really Well In My Recent Bathroom Renovation
This is what I did:
- A single black faucet and drain in the vanity sink,
- Matte black vanity hardware,
- Matte black vertical wall sconce, matte black door hooks, and towel rack,
- Matte black bathroom door lever by Schlage.
- It worked well with the white, chocolate brown, soft grays, and chrome colour palette. The matte black accents added a touch of sophistication to a calming and relaxing bathroom. I love it!
Shower Faucet, Tub, and Sink Faucets
Adding a matte black showerhead to your current shower faucet is a terrific way to update it. It can be as simple as unscrewing the old and putting on the new showerhead. It’s a simple modification that can have a significant impact. However, changing the shower taps and swapping out your bathroom sink faucet with a matte black one will complete the look.

Matte Black Linear Drains
Matte black linear drains provide more options with the Schluter drains and accessories. Schluter®-Systems recently expanded its matte black product line with the addition of two additional grates for its KERDI-LINE linear drain.
Choose a darker tile to blend in or a brighter tile to create a bold contrast. Matte black SOLID and SQUARE grates are also available in several sizes.
The Matte Black drains feature a striking, modern style that will blend in effortlessly with your next bathroom remodelling project, especially if you’re planning a walk-in curbless shower. This timeless aesthetic is popular with homeowners and designers alike, with matte black faucets, showerheads, and accessories working together to transform boring into stunning.

Matte Black Shower Shelves
The new matte black linear drains are a great addition to the Schluter line-up and complement other existing matte black fixtures in the bathroom, including the prefabricated Schluter Shelf-N, W, and E shelves.
Also, the Schluter corner shelves can easily be retrofitted into an existing shower by carefully removing the grout from the desired place and properly caulking with a silicone sealant, providing you with additional storage when needed.

Switch to Matte Black Lighting Fixtures
Bathroom lighting is challenging, and I always suggest layering your lighting, if possible. I recommend having more than one source of light. Although overhead lighting is typical and is often the only source of light, it’s not ideal. Finding ways to incorporate other forms of lighting can add to the overall ambiance of the space.
For example, a pendant lamp is an elegant and distinctive addition to any area. Imagine relaxing in your black clawfoot tub while reading under the perfect reading light. A soft bulb hanging light would be great or consider adding wall sconces between mirrors or on either side of a mirror. Also, add dimmer switches as they allow you to adjust the lighting intensity and can help you save on utility costs and bulb replacements.
Changing your light fixtures to matte black is simple, affordable, and instantly enhances your room with a modern refresh. This light fixture swap-out may be a do-it-yourself project but always consult with a licensed electrical contractor to be safe.

Matte Black Door Hardware and Bathroom Accessories
Consider swapping out your cabinet and drawer hardware with a matte black option. Don’t forget about your towel racks, toilet roll holders, and door hooks to continue the transformation.
My son Michael made a beautiful live edge countertop that works with the vessel sink and matte black accents. Including a single faucet, a matte black framed mirror, a black matte light fixture, and a matching matte black toilet roll holder and towel rack. The final touch is the “hey” tile on the floor (by Ciot)! Subtle, clean, modern, and fun.

Install a Matte Black Sink, Countertop, or Vanity
There are many options available for bathroom sinks, vanities, and countertops. Don’t restrict yourself to the traditional looks, like drop-in or under-mount sinks. Consider a vessel or pedestal sink, too, and a wall-mounted double sink will bump up your style.
Not all styles will come in matte black, but consider one if you are looking for a wow factor in your bathroom renovation. Pair it with a champagne bronze or stainless-steel finish faucet and drain for dramatic contrast. Also, contrasting the white countertop with matte black cabinet doors and handles provides a focal point and helps ground the vanity.
Or you can consider installing black on black for a dramatic look like we did in one of Frank’s bathrooms on Holmes Family Rescue.
Matte Black Bathroom Sink
A black bathroom sink will go well with almost any existing vanity or cabinet. Use the contrast of a black sink or countertop against a white vanity or vice versa. If you choose a darker vanity with a white sink, the contrast will provide a focal point; remember to swap out your cabinet and drawer handles with matte black will add distinction and sophistication.
Installing a new sink or countertop might be difficult depending on the kind. If you have no expertise installing fixtures like these, I recommend consulting a professional installer.
Tip: Always hire a licensed professional contractor when renovating your bathroom, that includes, an Licensed Electrical Contracting business, as well as a licensed plumber.

The great thing about using Matte Black is that this bold yet sophisticated colour looks great almost in any décor setting. The most common color combinations are black and white, black and gray, and black and warm neutrals, but honestly, if you have the proper guidance and work with a designer, matte black will look great with golds, navy, blues, etc. browns, pinks, and greens.
