I always stress the importance of waterproofing in a bathroom. A well-executed bathroom renovation can greatly improve both the functionality and appearance of your space. However, even the most stunning bathroom can quickly fall victim to water damage, mold growth, and structural issues if effective waterproofing is not in place. Investing in high-quality waterproofing solutions is essential. The main benefit of waterproofing your bathroom is that it will help extend the lifespan of your renovation and protect your investment for many years to come.

Why Waterproofing Your Bathroom Matters

Bathrooms are one of the most moisture-prone areas in a home. Here are several reasons why waterproofing a bathroom is important:

  • If water sneaks into the wrong places – like behind tiles or under floors – it can rot your structure, cause mold and mildew, unpleasant odors and even affect your health.
  • A reliable waterproofed bathroom ensures the longevity and durability of your bathroom
  • Water can seep through grout lines and cracks over time, leading to hidden damage. That’s why you need a waterproofing system under your tile—not just a coat of paint.
  • Stops leaks. Water will always find a way to flow down to the floor below due to gravity. If there is a crack or weak point that develops in your walls or floors or if there are gaps between your bath and walls, you are allowing water to seep through and over time you may end up with water on the floor below your bathroom.

You need a proper waterproofing system that works together to protect your investment. A lot of people think tile and grout are waterproof but they are not. Waterproofing is an essential step for every homeowner looking to protect their bathroom from water damage.

When we were investigating Joann and Mike’s house on Holmes Family Rescue Season 2,  we discovered a lot of issues. A major one was the lack of any waterproofing done at all. We found a lot of mold behind the walls. You don’t want this happening to you.

Does a whole bathroom need to be waterproofed?

You want to have a continuous layer of waterproofing in your bathroom to prevent water from getting behind the walls.

Waterproofing your bathroom should include:

  • Walls
  • Floor
  • Joints and Seams

Schluter Waterproofing Solutions

Everyone knows I love Schluter products (with the signature “orange” on most products) and have used them for many years. Schluter is a name I trust because they are leaders in waterproofing technology, offering innovative products designed to protect bathroom surfaces from water infiltration.

Here are some key Schluter products that can enhance your bathroom renovation and provide superior waterproofing solutions:

1. Schluter-KERDI Membrane

This polyethylene waterproofing membrane provides a secure barrier against moisture, preventing leaks and mold growth. The KERDI membrane is designed to be used over your drywall or cement board in showers, tub surrounds, and other wet areas. However, if you use KERDI-BOARD, you don’t need to use KERDI membrane.

2. Schluter-KERDI-BOARD

KERDI-BOARD is a versatile, waterproof backer board that replaces drywall. It is ideal for creating tiled walls, vanities, and benches. KERDI-BOARD is lightweight, easy to cut, and helps eliminate the need for additional waterproofing layers.

3. Schluter-KERDI-BAND

KERDI-BAND is a waterproofing strip that ensures the seams are sealed between KERDI membranes, boards and other Schluter components, ensuring a continuous and watertight barrier.

4. Schluter-DITRA and DITRA-HEAT

Schluter-DITRA and DITRA-HEAT are game changers. These uncoupling membranes provide waterproofing and floor protection, including preventing cracked tiles and grout lines, while also allowing for the installation of in-floor heating systems. DITRA-HEAT combines waterproofing with the luxury of heated floors, enhancing both comfort and durability.

Now that you know why waterproofing a bathroom is important, here is How To Make Your Bathroom Watertight.

By waterproofing your bathroom, you prevent water from penetrating vulnerable areas like the walls, floors, and joints. This protects against rotting wood, rusting metal, and peeling paint. Additionally, waterproofing helps maintain a clean and dry environment, reducing the need for costly repairs in the future.

A well-sealed bathroom also contributes to better insulation and energy efficiency. Moisture buildup can lead to mold and mildew, both of which can damage insulation and reduce the effectiveness of your home’s climate control.
