We stepped in to help and I think I would say this was the most challenging and rewarding project of my career at that time.
First step was assessing structural issues and laying the groundwork for a safe and durable renovation. The basement was leaking in 3 spots. Water infiltration was occurring due to poor grading and lack of proper drainage.
The framing was not up to code, with load-bearing issues and misaligned beams.
Roof supports were inadequate and posed a collapse risk.
I'm a big believer in working with an accessibility expert when it comes to these types of job. Don't just hire any contractor who doesn't know what they are doing.
This particular layout and what the contractor did, did NOT accommodate wheelchair turning radii or accessibility guidelines.
Doorways were too narrow. No proper ramp or lift systems were installed.
The bathroom lacked grab bars, roll-in access, or even safe dimensions for use.
We poured a new, code-compliant concrete foundation with correct grading and drainage systems to prevent future water damage. We delivered a fully functional wheelchair-accessible bathroom, repaired the leaky foundation and roof, and provided the family with a safe, structurally sound, and properly built addition. I am so in debt with everyone who stepped up to help us, could not do it without our contributors and trades.
Their son now had a safe, comfortable space where he could move freely and independently.
