Holmes on Homes Podcast with Mike Holmes: Season 5 – Episode 1

Why is There a Shortage of Skilled Trade Workers? How VR Training and Early Education Can Help Solve the Problem

The skilled trades industry is facing a critical shortage, but it’s not because of a saturated market. In fact, according to Stats Canada, between 2016 and 2021, the number of tradespeople over 65 grew by nearly 12%, while the number of youth (ages 15-24) in the trades dropped by over 12%. So, what’s really going on?

On this episode of the Holmes on Homes Podcast, Mike Holmes is joined by his daughter Sherry Holmes, contractor & TV host, Frank Melecca, home renovation teacher at Judith Nyman Secondary School, and Shawn Smith from Logicaldox, a company revolutionizing skilled trades training with Virtual Reality. Together, they explore why the skilled trades crisis is happening and how it’s impacting the future of the industry.

They’ll dive into how VR (Virtual Reality) training can help solve the skilled trades shortage by transforming how we teach the next generation of tradespeople. They also address the need to introduce trades education earlier—as early as elementary school—to inspire young people to join the field. This episode also covers what are the most in-demand skilled trades, which are the least popular but present big opportunities, and how we can overcome the stigma.

From barriers to apprenticeship to technological advancements in training, the conversation offers practical advice on how to build a stronger, more skilled workforce for the future.

Ask Mike Holmes

Mike and his expert industry guests answer some of the most commonly asked questions.

1. What is causing the shortage of skilled trade workers?

Too many tradespeople are retiring, and not enough new workers are coming in. The biggest problem? A lack of apprenticeships and the stigma that trades are a “fallback” career. The demand is there, but we’re not filling it fast enough.

2. How does Virtual Reality (VR) enhance skilled trades training?

VR trains apprentices faster and safer. It allows learners to practice skills in a controlled environment like operating tools, handling materials, and learning safety protocols, reducing risks associated with traditional training methods. More confidence, fewer mistakes.

3. Why is there a stigma around careers in the skilled trades?

People still think college is the only path to success, but that’s outdated. Trades careers offer great pay, job security, and high demand. We need to shift the mindset and show that trades are smart career choices

4. What are the most in-demand skilled trades right now?

Electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs, and carpenters are in high demand, and the need keeps growing. With the housing boom and infrastructure projects, these careers aren’t going anywhere.

Masonry is also an overlooked trade with huge potential. Not as many people go into bricklaying, stonework, or concrete finishing, which means less competition, easier entry, and good wages. The Ontario Masonry Training Centre even connects students with paid apprenticeships right out of school, helping them start their careers fast.

5. How can introducing skilled trades education earlier help?

Kids need hands-on exposure early—as young as Grade 6. Let them try carpentry, electrical work, welding, and see what clicks. Early education leads to more apprentices, fewer shortages.

6. What are the barriers to apprenticeship opportunities in the skilled trades?

Not enough apprenticeships, union restrictions, and lack of employer participation. The demand is huge, but new workers can’t get experience without opportunities. We need more businesses offering apprenticeships.

7. What resources can help people get into the skilled trades?

Check out organizations like Skills Canada, SkillsUSA, and Jill of All Trades. They offer training, mentorship, and career guidance to help you get started in the trades.
