Fall is here, and that means it’s time to give the outside of your home a good check before winter shows up.

I always tell homeowners: protect your home from the outside in.

Check your roof, gutters and downspouts, siding, foundation, windows and doors. Look for cracks, loose materials, damaged caulking and anything that could let water, cold air or pests get inside.

And don’t forget the smaller jobs —draining exterior water lines, checking stairs and railings, cleaning up leaves and making sure your snow equipment is ready.

A little maintenance now can help prevent much bigger problems when the freezing temperatures, snow and ice arrive.
