For years I’ve been talking about protecting your home from the outside-in. And that includes protecting it against water intrusion. You always want water to move AWAY from your home’s foundation.

Cleaning your gutters is an essential but messy chore. Photo provided by LeafFilter.
A big part of that is having gutters that are clog-free. When your gutters are not well-maintained they get clogged with leaves, twigs and other debris. This means water cannot flow properly – leading to your gutters overflowing and water collecting around the base of your home. If this is not corrected it can lead to leaks, rot, foundation problems — even basement flooding. Trust me, I’ve seen a lot of this in my career.
Here’s a story for you. There were two couples I helped on Holmes on Homes (Stacy & Peter and Donna & Bill). Together they owned one half of a 100‑year‑old Victorian semi‑detached home. They had extensive water damage, despite bringing in multiple contractors to find the root cause. The Make It Right crew came in to help, and a big part of that was making sure we gave them a proper water management system.
You always want water to move AWAY from your home’s foundation.
Why Install Gutter Guards
Gutter guards are protective systems that are installed over or inside your home’s rain gutters. In my opinion, installing gutter guards is a must. Gutter guards prevent debris from entering the gutters that can cause clogs. The best type will allow water to flow through but block leaves, twigs and other debris.

So how much should you pay for gutter guards? Are they really worth it? Can I install them myself and what should you look for in a quality product? I’m going to explain all of that.
What Do You Need to Consider When Purchasing Gutter Guards?
When it comes to purchasing gutter guards you want to be sure you are making the best choice for your home, and there are a few factors that will affect the price.
- The size of your home
- Your roof configuration and type (more complex structures will require more material and labor)
- The length and size of your gutters
- The material of the gutter guards
- The type of guard you choose (depends of climate and type of debris)
- Accessibility to your gutters
Which Gutter Guard Material is Best?
There are so many different gutter guards on the market it can be overwhelming. Some guards are perforated, some are solid metal while others are micromesh. For a new Holmes on Homes job, I installed the LeafFilter gutter guards, and I am impressed. That’s my top pick.

How Much Does it Cost To Install Gutter Guards?
If your gutters are in good shape and don’t need to be replaced, installing gutter guards can be a smart way to protect your home from clogs, leaks, and potential water damage. Professional installation typically includes materials, labour, and any minor repairs or removal of old guards if needed.
The total cost will depend on factors like the type of guard you choose, the size of your home, and your location—but when you consider the potential cost of water damage and foundation issues, it’s a small investment that’s completely worth it.
Plus, with LeafFilter’s lifetime warranty, you’re getting long-term protection and peace of mind knowing your gutters are working exactly as they should.

Things to Keep in Mind
Proximity to Trees: the more trees you have on your property, especially those that shed heavily like pines or maples, the more often you may need to perform maintenance. Always keep trees close to your house trimmed and away from the roofline.
Local climate: across North America the climate regions vary greatly and have an impact on your home. Areas with frequent storms, high winds, or heavy snowfall will likely require more attention.
Watch out for Build Up: Certain types of debris, such as pine needles and grit can build up more easily, so during your seasonal inspections ensure your gutters guards are not obstructed with a build up.
Gutter guards are a smart investment that help prevent gutter clogs, water damage, and expensive foundation problems by keeping debris out and allowing water to flow freely. They also help reduce the need for cleaning and maintenance. LeafFilter’s durable micro-mesh design, professional installation, and lifetime warranty is my top choice.
