About The Skilled Trades Competitions

The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) is where passion meets skill. It’s where the future of Canada’s workforce takes center stage.

As Skills/Compétences Canada’s flagship event, SCNC is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition in the country.

The event gives students and apprentices a platform to showcase their talents and connect with industry leaders. Each year, more than 500 of Canada’s top skilled trade and technology students compete in over 40 competitions.

But SCNC isn’t just about competition—it’s an immersive career exploration experience!

Thousands visit the competition floor to test their skills through over 50 hands-on Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities, engage with industry experts and exhibitors. They get to learn about career opportunities and discover firsthand the excitement and rewards of a future in skilled trades and technologies. Furthermore, SCNC 2025 is a qualifying year for eligible winners to compete at the 48th WorldSkills Competition, in Shanghai, China. SCNC Over the Years: A Legacy of Growth & Innovation

The Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) has come a long way since its debut in 1994 in Hamilton, ON, where only four provinces—Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec—participated.

By 1998, all provinces and territories had joined the competition, making SCNC Canada’s premier event for skilled trade and technology students.

Initially, SCNC was competitor-focused, but over the years, the event has evolved to also provide an engaging, hands-on experience for visitors. The introduction of Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities at SCNC Québec 2011 marked a turning point. Starting with just 24 activities, this number has now expanded to over 50, offering students even greater opportunities to explore skilled trade and technology careers.

SCNC’s impact continues to grow with more industry partners collaborating to promote careers in skilled trades and technologies, stronger promotion and outreach, bringing in more student visitors, and celebrity involvement inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals.

A key supporter of SCNC, The Holmes Group first participated in 2006 and has been a proud advocate ever since.

The Impact of SCNC: Shaping Canada’s Future Workforce

Every year, Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) reaches over 100,000 youth through its competitions alone, inspiring the next generation to explore skilled trade and technology careers as a first-choice career pathway. These careers are among the most in-demand yet hardest to fill in Canada.
