Holmes Makes it Right | Teacher Needed Help

We are taking a look back at this Holmes Makes It Right episode that I still think about often.

A really nice couple Mike and Trina were dealing with a life-changing incident. Life can really change in an instance.
When we met Mike, he was just learning how to walk all over again and suffering from a lot of nerve damage. We wanted to make it easier for him to get around his house. He also believed that if he had a backyard area to walk around, it would speed up his rehabilitation.

The Tragic Accident

Mike was a teacher, and one evening, Mike and Trina’s window was hit by an egg. Mike ran outside and saw a minivan driving away. He stepped out on the curb, and the minivan accelerated. Mike couldn’t believe the van would actually hit him but they came across the road speeding towards him. The van mounted the curb and hit Mike on the left side of my body. He couldn’t get up.
Mike ended up in the hospital bed for just under 8 weeks. Tragic hit-and-run accident, and the two kids were never caught.
Life can really change in an instance.

The Accessible Backyard Makeover

Mike and Trina’s backyard was one of their favourite parts of their house. When I met Mike, he could slowly manage his way down a couple flights of stairs, there was no way he could safely go up and down his backyard stairs. I knew I had to fix that for him.

My crew and I got rid of a bunch of barriers, like a step down to the backyard. Additionally, we wanted Mike to be able to easily navigate from the front of his house to the back. One thing we did was put in a big 42″ door to make it easier for him to access the backyard. We built a state-of-the-art deck for them so they could enjoy their space.

The Holmes crew also gave him a really nice hot tub with a handle, so he can easily get inside the hot tub.
