Episode 3: Hand-me-down Hazards
From the day Steve and Angela purchased their suburban bungalow in 1975, everything they’ve done has been with their family’s legacy in mind. Nearly 50 years later, after successfully raising two kids, Steve and Angela are experiencing their golden years and all the challenges that come with them. Knowing their determination to never leave their beloved home, their daughter Melissa has moved into their frozen, overstuffed basement to ensure they are well cared for, assisting with the daily duties and adding medical appointments.
Touched by Melissa’s sacrifice, her parents want to transform the basement into the warm, inviting, adult living space she deserves.
But plans to gut the basement were scrapped when it became apparent that their main floor bathroom had become a dangerous slipping hazard. After Angela had a few near disasters climbing into their tub / shower, Melissa insisted a safe bathroom become top priority.
Upon gutting the bathroom, it became clear that this house was hiding multiple age-related issues. Most obvious was long out of date aluminum wiring. A notorious fire hazard, this discovery shook Steve to his core. The thought that his beloved bungalow could all go up in flames is literally keeping them up at night, as Steve now suffers from frequent fire-related nightmares.
Now overwhelmed and unable to move forward with their plans to give Melissa the comfortable and attractive living space she deserves, Steve and Melissa have reached out to the only family they trust to do the job right – Mike Holmes and his kids Michael and Sherry, whose own legacy of helping hard-hit families out of disastrous dilemmas make them the most trustworthy choice to protect this family’s painstakingly preserved home for generations to come.
