Michael Thindi

Joinery Student

Since starting at the SOS Vocational Training Centre in Februray 2009 Michael has made a tea tray, a chapatti board (a circular board on a stand for rolling dough), a book rack and is now producing a stool.

We find him in the workshop preparing for the four legs for the stool, which, he explains, he will join to the stool using mortise and tendon joints and no nails whatsoever. "They don't use nails in this place," he explains proudly. Michael goes on to describe how he will make the joint using a mallet and chisel. He adds that it will take him approximately two weeks to make the stool.

When asked how he likes the training center, Michael answers that it is the best thing that has ever happened to him. "I am really happy about it," he continues, "and I really thank Mike Holmes for helping me out because there is no other way I will be able to help my seven step brothers and sisters who will depend on me when I get a job. May God bless him, that's all I can say."

Michael adds shyly, that maybe later, when he can do much better woodwork, he will make a present for Mike Holmes to show his gratitude.

Michael's teacher is pleased with his progress and says he is doing very well. He adds that Michael is his best student in the theory class and improving in practical class as well. "He comes on time," he says, "and the class appointed him as the class representative, so they realize he will give them his best. I cannot complain about anything."
