"I've been getting a few emails lately from homeowners asking about R-value. What is it? What does it mean? How much do I need? How much is too much? How much is too little? I'm going to try and clear this up for everyone.
When we talk about R-value -- usually insulation -- we're talking about a material's ability to resist heat flow. The R-value of any material measures how well a material resists the transfer of heat if the temperature on one side of it is higher than on the other side. The higher the R-value, the better the material insulates."

The Holmes Foundation’s Make It Right® Scholarships are designed to encourage students in Canadian colleges and universities who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in residential renovation or construction to complete their academic training.
Every academic year The Holmes Foundation will award up to ten bursaries to students entering or enrolled in a residential construction program at a Canadian college or university. The bursaries, each valued at $1,500 will be awarded up to five male students and up to five female students.

"Although Mike is extremely guarded regarding his ‘Make It Right’ trademark, he is prepared to share it for a worthy cause. In 2007, Hollywood god, Brad Pitt, set up a charity by the same name to help rebuild homes in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Mike not only gave Brad the thumbs up to use the slogan, but also proposed that they ‘Make It Right’ together and signed up to build a prototype LEED-certified environmentally-friendly home for grandmother Gloria Guy in the lower 9th ward area and supervise the construction of five similar builds in just ten week – half the time a task of such scale would normally require. The project was filmed for a special ‘Holmes in New Orleans’ programme, and documents Mike and his crew braving torrential rain and soaring temperatures in order to complete the builds to deadline."

CBC Television, CTV and Global Television have united in their support for Haiti as it struggles under the crippling devastation of last week's earthquake.
Donations accepted during the broadcast will go towards a coalition of Canadian NGOs, including Canadian Red Cross Society, Care Canada, Free the Children, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec, Plan Canada, Save the Children Canada, UNICEF Canada and World Vision Canada."
EMERGENCY APPEAL FOR THE CHILDREN IN HAITI
SOS Children´s Villages staff members are already assessing the damage and supporting the emergency response.
They will provide basic medical supplies, drinking water and basic food supplies to the children and families living in the communities surrounding our SOS Children´s Villages and other facilities.
SOS will provide temporary shelter for children in the affected area and will support children who have lost their parents in the catastrophe.

MESSAGE FROM MIKE - COPENHAGEN CLIMATE CONFERENCE
Hi everyone,
I'm in Copenhagen, as a guest of Jim Prentice, the Minister of the Environment. The Minister invited me to come to COP15 as an Eminent Advisor to the Canadian Delegation--a pretty impressive title for a guy who still thinks of himself as 'just a contractor'. I'm not here to give any one advice, and I'm sure not here to do any negotiations--let's leave that for the experts.
I'm here to learn.
What I'd like to take away is as much information as I can get about my area of expertise--building--and how residential building impacts climate change. There's no question that a large amount of energy is wasted by how we live in our houses, energy we can save by building smarter, more efficiently, and more sustainably. If there is one thing I've learned in my career as a builder, there is always a better way to do things.
I'm going to do my best to discover some of those ways, and to share that information with you to help Make it Right.
